A cough is a defensive reflex of the body that helps keep the airways clear of irritating or obstructing substances so that breathing and the intake of oxygen is effective. In addition to being an airway defense mechanism, coughing is a very common symptom observed in many diseases. One should avoid development of a persistent cough; this would prevent the vicious cycle of a cough and could avoid many related complications, such as fatigue, sleep deprivation, hoarseness, musculoskeletal pain, sweating and urinary incontinence.
